TYPOGRAPHIONS – ELIOT
drawing / collage
The Typographions series is created by transforming text into the material of the image. The starting point is T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. Ten sentences have been selected from the poem and, through repetition, fragmentation, layering and changes of scale, are stripped of their original linearity. Text ceases to be something that leads through meaning and begins to function as sign, rhythm, structure and visual matter.
The process is based on a tension between legibility and illegibility. Individual words and fragments of sentences retain their meanings, but their repeated use gradually shifts their significance. What initially functions as a message becomes an image. Meaning does not disappear completely, but is suspended between what can be read and what can only be seen.
For me, Typographions is an attempt to cross the boundary between word and image. Through multiplication and fragmentation, text ceases to be merely language — it becomes the material from which the image is constructed.
In this sense, I do not illustrate the text, but subject it to a process of visualization. I am interested in the moment when a word ceases to function solely as a carrier of meaning and begins to exist as an autonomous sign.
